Gemma Barry is the BHS Young Instructor of the Year 2008

Gemma Barry is the BHS Young Instructor of the Year 2008

Gemma Barry from Exmouth, Devon has been named as The British Horse Society's Young Instructor of the Year.

Twelve young teachers attended the finals of the competition sponsored by South Essex Insurance Brokers at Warwickshire College. They were judged by a panel which comprised Sue Payne FBHS, Richard Davidson FBHS and BHS Chairman, Patrick Print FBHS.

All of the finalists had qualified at regional competitions held at BHS Approved Centres throughout 2008. Each qualifier is used as a training day for the selected applicants and allows them the opportunity to question, discuss and debate coaching and teaching skills with a Fellow of the BHS. The Fellowship is the highest level of Instructor qualification awarded by the BHS.

Gemma, who is 27 and holds the BHSII SM, qualified at Pippin Equestrian Centre in Gillingham, Dorset.

She said: "I can't believe I've won! I am working towards my BHS Equitation and Teaching qualification so I thought entering the competition would be good experience of performing under pressure. I would recommend the experience for anyone training towards BHS exams.

"I found it extremely useful to be able to watch other people and gain new ideas. Both the training day and the final have been fantastic"

The finalists were required to teach private lessons lasting 30 minutes in both dressage and show jumping, and deliver a 15-minute presentation on various aspects of Stable Management.

Patrick Print FBHS, BHS Chairman, said: "It was an enjoyable day to take with such an enthusiastic group of young instructors. All the candidates showed promising qualities but the winner showed good competences in all three areas."

The 2009 Competition will begin in spring next year. Each applicant must be 30 years of age or under on 1 January 2009, hold a minimum of the BHS Preliminary Teaching Test and be actively involved in the equine industry.
