Nicola Tustain Steps Down From International Competition

Nicola Tustain Steps Down From International Competition

Paralympian and World Champion Para Equestrian Dressage rider Nicola Tustain announced today she is to step down from International competition with immediate effect. Having been at the top of her sport for 12 years Tustain has taken the decision for family reasons and is not ruling out a return to top flight sport in the future.

"The riding takes me away from home such a lot; we're a close family and they have to come first. I'll continue to be a member of British Dressage and compete locally as well as to teach and mentor to keep my hand in but a break will also enable me to try out other things. This has been a really hard decision. I've had so much support from my sponsors, trainers, family and friends and I'd like to thank everyone that has been involved with my successful career so far."

Nicola is part of the UK Sport funded Para-Equestrian Dressage World Class Performance Programme and has represented GB at Paralympic, World, and European level. Career highlights include 3 gold and 3 bronze medals from Paralympic games in 2000 and 2004 and gold medals from each of the three World Championships since 1999. As well as her success at para equestrian dressage Nicola is also an accomplished badminton player and was Welsh disabled champion 2006. She is heavily involved in disability sport in Wales and will use the time spent closer to home to invest in these causes close to her heart.

Nicola has been well supported throughout her career by principal sponsors Mr and Mrs T Pidgley and The Berkeley Group as well as Albion Saddlemakers, Ariat International, Patey Hats and Mrs Ro Pudden.

Para Equestrian Dressage Team Manager David Hunter comments: "It's a great shame but we fully support Nic's decision to put family matters first. She's been an outstanding squad member and extremely successful both as part of the team and individually. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank her and her family for the substantial commitment and investments they have made to competition at this level. I hope we will be able to welcome Nic back to the international stage as and when her circumstances allow."
