Miranda Richardson lays wreath for war animals

First published by: World Society for the Protection of Animals Nov 10, 2008

Actress and animal welfare campaigner Miranda Richardson visited the Animals in War memorial monument on Remembrance Sunday to lay a personal wreath.

The actress, who is a keen supporter of animal welfare charities including the World Society for the Protection of Animals, was accompanied by WSPA Director Philip Russell.

The Animals in War Memorial commemorates the millions of conscripted animals that served, suffered and died alongside British, Commonwealth, and American forces in 20th century wars and conflicts.

The memorial is situated at Brook Gate, Park Lane, on the edge of London's Hyde Park and was designed by leading English sculptor, David Backhouse.  It was inspired by Jilly Cooper's book, Animals in War, and was made possible by a specially set up fund, of which Ms Cooper is co-trustee, and which was chaired by WSPA Director General Peter Davies.

Miranda said:
"On a day when we all rightly remember the millions of men and women who have served our country in so many wars, I wanted to pay my respects to the millions of animals who served us with loyalty and devotion too. This memorial is still relevant today when we have sniffer dogs working alongside British forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Animals of all kinds continue to be used in war situations throughout the world and it's important to remember their contribution."
