Charity seeks loving home for pony who is allergic to carrots

Charity seeks loving home for pony who is allergic to carrots

A PONY living at an equine welfare charity in Bristol is this month (November) seeking a new home well away from...carrots.

HorseWorld in Whitchurch, which is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of horses, ponies and donkeys in need, is looking for someone who has experience driving horses or ponies to have Dinky, a 10.3hh (hands high) Dartmoor-Cross, who is allergic to carrots, on loan.

Sasha Holden, Equine Training Manager at HorseWorld, said: "Dinky has recently been broken to drive and has been pulling a cart since March 2008. She's an 18 ‘carat' driving pony so it's quite ironic that she's allergic to carrots. It's very unusual to have a pony who can't eat carrots so potential loaners would need to be really careful not to feed them to her.

"She hasn't had the best of lives up until now and is looking for a very special home to care for her and to enjoy driving her. She has a calm, un-fussed attitude to her work and has never been fazed by pulling her cart. She's forward going and happily walking and trotting around tracks, on grass and on the roads. Her main fault in her work at present is she is quite figity and hates standing still.

"She is good in traffic and has been out driving in heavy traffic. Dinky is now ready to go to a loaner with experience of driving where she can continue to be brought on."

Dinky is one of nearly 500 equines that HorseWorld cares for. The charity gives them the safe and happy futures they deserve, free from pain or neglect.

Sasha added: "Dinky is showing good promise as a driving pony and will hopefully have many years of happy driving ahead of her."

The charity has two sites comprising its Welfare Department and Visitor Centre. Staff at the Welfare Department work tirelessly to rehabilitate sick, neglected or traumatised horses bringing them back to health and enabling them to trust humans once again.

The Visitor Centre also plays an important role, allowing the public to meet some of the recovered animals and learn about animal welfare. Funds raised from the Visitor Centre are used to help pay for the charity's work.

Anyone who is experienced with equines and would like to offer Dinky a long-term home can complete an application form online by visiting http://www.horseworld.org.uk.

By clicking on re-homing within the Equine Welfare section of the website people can get a list of animals available for loan.

Anyone who is interested in being part of the loan scheme will be assessed for their suitability by the Welfare Team.
