World Horse Welfare celebrates successful third year in Romania

World Horse Welfare celebrates successful third year in Romania

World Horse Welfare has now completed its third year of veterinary seminars at faculties across Romania in a bid to educate students and practitioners on up-to-date equine veterinary techniques.

The twice-yearly seminars, part of the charity's five year campaign, Project Romania, are run with the help of expert speakers from The Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital, Leahurst, part of Liverpool University.

In October, the topic was respiratory and cardiovascular medicine and saw the speakers give a range of lecture presentations as well as a demonstration of practical elements such as endoscopy, something which is not commonplace in Romanian faculties.

Head of Campaigns and European Affairs, Emma Cook, comments: "We are now over half way through Project Romania and we are finding that the interest and attendance in our seminars grows year on year. Hirstorically, Romania holds the horse in high regard and they remain an integral part of working life.

"However, the history of the country means there is a knowledge gap - and this is what we are working to fill. The enthusiasm is certainly prevalent and our courses are open to those who are dealing with horses on a regular basis or will be when they graduate, so that information and techniques may be filtered through to the owner."

Six veterinary student seminars and four practitioner seminars have now been completed this year and feedback from participants has been extremely positive, especially thanks to the interactive nature of the presentations.

Emma continues: "We are keen to ensure that the seminars are as relevant to the audience as possible so when planning future seminars we consider feedback from attendees as well as carry out or own field research. Ultimately, we are working towards a sustainable future in Romania."

Project Romania runs in conjunction with World Horse Welfare's International Training department, which focuses on practical elements of horse welfare such as farriery and nutrition.
