Equine charity hosts training demonstrations

Equine charity hosts training demonstrations

CHILDREN and adults from Bristol and the surrounding area are being invited to an equine welfare charity this half-term (October 24 - 31) to see demonstrations of techniques used by the organisation to rehabilitate and train the horses and ponies in its care.

Equine Trainers at HorseWorld in Whitchurch, which is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of horses, ponies and donkeys in need, will give demonstrations of the rehabilitation and training techniques at the charity's Visitor Centre on Friday, October 24 and then again from Monday, October 27 until Friday, October 31.

Sasha Holden, Equine Training Manager at HorseWorld, said: "Visitors will have the chance to watch special displays of lunging and riding as well as see one of the highlights of the week, which will involve training Lickerty, who is a young colt foal, to wear a halter and be led.

"We will also lunge Pepe, an Overo Criollo horse from Argentina, in the harbridge, which is designed to lower the head and lift the back, to help improve the strength in his back. Pepe is a very tense horse so this has the benefit of strengthening his top line and lowering his head, which will lower the heart rate and reduce stress."

Other demonstrations taking place during the week will involve Toby, an Exmoor pony, who is a serial biter and often kicks. The trainers will be working on improving his behaviour using non-confrontational methods to aid his understanding of what is expected from him. All of the training will take place in a safe, enclosed paddock at HorseWorld's Visitor Centre.

Sasha added: "Toby has been bottle reared, which has left confusion in his mind of appropriate behaviour around people so we will be showing people the techniques we use to help improve his manners.

"We will also be working with Charity, a feral pony, who recently featured on Channel 5's Animal Rescue Squad, to help improve her confidence.

HorseWorld is responsible for the care of nearly 500 equines, giving them the safe and happy futures they deserve, free from pain or neglect.

The charity has two sites comprising its Welfare Department and Visitor Centre. Staff at the Welfare Department work tirelessly to rehabilitate sick, neglected or traumatised horses bringing them back to health and enabling them to trust humans once again.

The Visitor Centre also plays an important role, allowing the public to meet some of the recovered animals and learn about animal welfare. Funds raised from the Visitor Centre are used to help pay for the charity's work.

The demonstrations will take place at HorseWorld's Visitor Centre on Friday, October 24 and then again from Monday, October 27 until Friday, October 31 from 10am until 3.30pm, weather dependent.
