GB riders prepare to do battle at World TREC Championships 2008

GB riders prepare to do battle at World TREC Championships 2008

The British Horse Society has high hopes for the British team which will compete at the World TREC Championships at Lamotte Beuvron in France this weekend (19-21 September).

The British hopefuls will take on riders from 14 nations, including the French who will be keen for a win on home soil. As the creators of TREC, the French are sure to put on a tough competition true to the origins of the sport. The POR (orienteering) phase is likely to be a particularly complex test, as George Vincent, the tracer who has set the route, is renowned for setting highly technical courses requiring superior navigating skills.

However, with former world champion David Hay-Thorburn and former world POR winner Anthea Kendrick in the squad, backed up by 2007 British Champion Anna Weston, 2006 European Bronze medallist Hilary Barnard and team stalwart Paul Turner, the Brits are feeling confident.

The selectors will have an unenviable job deciding which four riders will compete in the team, and which two as individuals, as even the rookie of the squad, Daniel Nolan, has enjoyed a meteoric rise to success. He has been competing in the sport for just three years and already has a string of very impressive results under his belt.

Helen Owens, Senior Executive, BHS Competitions said: "We believe that the selectors have chosen a really strong squad this year. All the riders have worked extremely hard and we wish them the very best of luck for a good result."

Two junior riders will also be heading out to Lamotte Beuvron to contest the Young Riders European TREC Championships, which will be held at the same time and venue as the seniors. Twenty-year-old Julia Knight-Jones, who was part of the bronze medal winning young rider team in 2006, will be joined by seventeen-year-old Anne Bolton, making her international debut.

The Senior World Championship Squad comprises:

Hilary Barnard, Harvey

Anthea Kendrick, The Wing Commander

David Hay-Thorburn, Brenfield Mhairi

Anna Weston, Caspian The Wizard

Daniel Nolan, Tammy

Paul Turner, Cwmmeudwy Magic

The Young Riders European Championship competitors are:

Anna Bolton, Eba Amarixa

Julia Knight-Jones, Fleetmead Ross
