Police are appealing for witnesses after the bodies of two young ponies were found in a lay-by near Basingstoke.
Police were called at 10.20am on Tuesday January 24th by a local resident in the village of Up Nately. The bodies were found in heathr Row, and a local vet and officers from the local ILPH also attended.
Both ponies are believed to be about a year old and less than 10 hands high. One is a black and white (piebald) colt with four white socks, a white tail, a white stripe down the middle of his body and a white flash on his nose. The other is a chestnut filly with a white blaze from the top of her head to her nose, and a white underbelly.
It is believed the bodies had been there less than 24 hours when they were found and police are appealing to anyone who saw a vehicle parked there or anything suspicious in the area between 9pm Monday 23rd January and 9am on Tuesday 24th of January.
PC Steve Antrobus said: "We would like to hear from anyone who knows where these horses came from. The vet has told us that the piebald colt has been kept somewhere with a straw floor and the chestnut had been kept on sand. They could have come from the same premises, although kept in different conditions.
Both Ponies showed signes of neglect, and the filly was severely emaciated. There were also marks of blue paint on the fillys hooves, which probably came from the inside of the vehicle it was transported in.
A yellow van was seen in the lay-by on the Monday. This may not be connected and we are appealing to the driver to contact us. Anyone with information is urged to contact:
Basingstoke Police on: 0845 045 4545 or call the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111
