ANIMAL WELFARE ACT HELPS BAN
ANIMAL WELFARE ACT HELPS BAN Redwings Horse Sanctuary has given a home to horses from a successful prosecution by Powys County Council where the woman was banned from keeping horses for life. A few days before Christmas a woman from Powys was found guilty of not meeting the needs of her horses by providing a suitable environment and a proper diet. The woman's horses were fed on sheep feed and unsoaked sugar beet, and were being kept on soiled bedding with rubbish strewn across the site. |
| Seven horses, together with a foal born later, are now living at Redwings' Norfolk headquarters and are progressing well. One stallion sadly had to be euthanased a few months after his rescue due to numerous health problems including advanced arthritis that was thought to have been brought on by his poor conformation. At the end of January this year, the woman was banned from keeping horses for life and given a 12-month community order with 240 hours unpaid work and required to pay £14,000 in costs. |
This case in particular used the new Animal Welfare Act to great effect as it allowed us to step in and remove the horses from a totally unsuitable situation before things really got out of hand. The very serious sentence shows just how vital it is for horse owners ensure their animals' needs are being met."
