World Horse Welfare helps to recover stolen donkeys

World Horse Welfare helps to recover stolen donkeys.

Nine donkeys stolen from a Buckinghamshire farm have been recovered and returned to their elderly owner, thanks to the hard work of a Field Officer from leading international horse charity World Horse Welfare.

Nick White, World Horse Welfare Field Officer for Bucks, London and surrounding areas, was determined to help track down the donkeys after they were reported stolen on 18th September. A total of eleven donkeys were taken from the farm at Chalfont St Giles, leaving their owner distraught.

On 23rd September, Nick was carrying out a routine check on some horses in his area when he came across a group of three donkeys.

His suspicions raised, Nick called for backup and was able to identify one of the donkeys - a stallion named Darrell - through a microchip. Darrell was returned to the owner the same day.

"It was wonderful to find Darrell safe and well, but it only fuelled me on to find the remaining donkeys," says Nick.

On 29th September, eight more donkeys were recovered after a Hertfordshire farmer reported damage to a lock and gate to one of his fields. Nick immediately went to the location together with Helen Evans from Thames Valley Horsewatch and officers from Thames Valley and Hertfordshire Police and all eight donkeys were identified as stolen by comparisons to their passports and microchip numbers.

Continues Nick: "We were able to return all eight donkeys to their very grateful owner the next day and prior to leaving we helped make the premises more secure to prevent a further theft. All we need to do now is find the remaining two donkeys and I will be happy."

The recovery and return of the donkeys was filmed by a crew from the BBC show Animal 24:7. The episode is likely to be aired next year.
