Piggy French to make Senior Eventing Squad Debut

Piggy French to make Senior Eventing Squad Debut

The British Eventing Senior Selection Committee have announced that 29-year-old Piggy French, born and raised in Norfolk and now based in Leicestershire, will make her Senior Eventing Squad debut this month on Some Day Soon, owned by Miriam Midgley, James Midgley, Sue Crane and Walter French.

Piggy joins William Fox-Pitt, Oliver Townend, Tina Cook, Nicola Wilson and Lucy Wiegersma on the squad of six for the Senior Eventing European Championships in Fontainebleau, France (23-27 September 2009).

Sadly Mary King was forced to withdraw from the squad following a slight setback with her ride, Imperial Cavalier, owned by Mr & Mrs E Davies and Janette Chinn.

Piggy has had the ride on Some Day Soon since the end of the 2008 eventing season and has since enjoyed international success on the bay gelding.

Piggy French to make Senior Eventing Squad Debut

Piggy achieved 3rd in the CCI3* at Bramham Horse Trials back in June, as well as 6th in the CIC3* at Hartpury Horse Trials in August.

Piggy is thrilled about making her squad debut: "I'm still in shock! I'm obviously very excited about the Europeans and can't wait to get over to France for the competition."

Piggy is a member of the UK Sport funded World Class Development squad which aims to identify and nurture talented riders, preparing them to represent Team GBR at international level.

The trip to Fontainebleau has been possible thanks to the unerring support of the Equestrian World Class Programme, which supports a pathway to success for Eventing, Show Jumping, Dressage and Para-Equestrian Dressage athletes. The aim is to have in place a sustainable system that can deliver more medals on the international stage now and in the future. The Programme has been funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, primarily from the National Lottery, via UK Sport since 1998.

The squad of six travelling to the Senior Eventing Europeans is:

  • Tina Cook riding Mr & Mrs Nicholas Embiricos and Sarah Pelham's Miners Frolic
  • William Fox-Pitt riding Mr George & Mrs Jayne Apter's Idalgo
  • Piggy French riding Miriam Midgley, James Midgley, Sue Crane and Walter French's Some Day Soon
  • Oliver Townend riding Mr Edward & Mr Robert Nicholson's Flint Curtis
  • Lucy Wiegersma riding Mrs Ginnie Lyne's Woodfalls Inigo Jones
  • Nicola Wilson riding Miss Rosemary Search's Opposition Buzz
