Voices for Horses reply to Horse Horror

Voices for Horses reply to Horse Horror

Today we sent an email to the RSPCA press office.

We are an equine community web site called www.voicesforhorses.co.uk and members have been contacting our office because they were surprised to learn from the TV, radio and internet news that the farm in Buckinghamshire where so many dead horses were found and where so many others were neglected was already known to you. In which case how was this present situation allowed to become such an horrendous tragedy?

Please could you answer this question for my members.

Here is their reply:

Thanks for the enquiry. I hope the following will suffice, and hopefully it will reassure your readers. As it says on the statement, there is more we'd like to be able to say, but cannot because of legal restrictions.

Statement by Tim Wass, RSPCA Regional Superintendent

"The owner was known to the RSPCA, and while we had concerns about his horses, conditions had been at a legally acceptable level during our last visits. So, the only option the RSPCA inspectors had then was to
offer animal welfare advice to improve the situation - we did not have the power to remove the animals any earlier.

"Conditions had declined drastically when the RSPCA returned to the farm last week, and inspectors acted immediately, with Thames Valley Police to remove the remaining 111 animals from the property.

"As you can appreciate, it has been a massive operation to remove and arrange for the ongoing care of such a large number of animals, many of whom were in desperate need of veterinary treatment. Our officers, along with those from supporting welfare charities, have been working tirelessly to secure their welfare in what have been appalling circumstances.

"We regret that while we are gathering evidence for a potential prosecution we are not able to answer more specifically the concerns and allegations that have been raised without prejudicing any potential
legal proceedings."
