Question: I have to leave my livery yard which means my 8 year old gelding has to leave his friends and the only home he has known. Is there anything I can give him to help prevent any separation anxiety? Dena Answers: It is a great idea to offer your gelding a little extra support at this challenging time. Moving can definitely be made easier by taking a very holistic approach to the situation. It may sound a little crazy but do tell your horse well in advance about your move and the reasons behind it. I believe horses understand much more than we give them credit for. If your boy is happy to hack alone take him for a few rides in the week or two prior too moving, this will boost his confidence, re-affirm your partnership and remind him of his independence. Also ensure he gets to spend a little play time with all his friends before he leaves. There are some wonderful plant remedies that you could offer before, during and after your move. Essential oils and plant extracts such as German Chamomile, Rose, Linden Blossom and Violet Leaf offer support on an emotional level and physical level. Their qualities help to reduce stress and anxiety, offer confidence and security and help to alleviate any sadness. Violet Leaf is known as the heart protector and is wonderfully grounding. These remedies can all be offered for inhalation; often animals will use inhalation as their preferred method of application for emotional issues. On inhalation the volatile molecules travel up through the nose directly to the limbic area of the brain ‘otherwise known as the emotional brain' the positive effects of the oils can be often be seen very quickly. If your horse shows an interest in taking any of these remedies internally we would need to blend them in suitable base oil. He may demonstrate his desire by licking the air and chewing or licking at the bottle. I will happily supply these remedies to you pre blended to avoid any risk and to make the process a little simpler for you both. There are a few herbs that may also be worth considering, these will offer a little extra support for his immune and digestive systems as you make this transition. I would recommend offering Rosehips, Barley Grass Powder, Dandelion, Nettle, Cleavers and Meadowsweet herb. Offer your remedies daily until he is fully settled into his new home, or until he shows no further interest in them. Lastly remember to relax and enjoy the move yourself, your boy will pick up on your energy. If you have any emotional wobbles you can use the oils yourself, a few drops in the bath or on your pillow or just take three deep inhalations of your favorite aromas two to three times a day, these methods will help you to stay calm and relaxed throughout. Kindest regards Dena |
