My mare had a long labor is there a pick me up for her? Dena Schwartz If you have questions about Equine Alternative & Complementary Therapies please send an email to: admin@voicesforhorses.co.uk |
Question: My mare had a long hard labor delivering her foal. Both are fine but I am sure both must feel pretty bruised and battered. Is there anything I can give them as a pick me up? It is lovely that you are so keen to help your mare at this special time. There are many herbs and oils that can offer her support on both a physical and emotional level. It is important to note that as she is feeding her young foal there will be remedies that we cannot use. Initially for your mare I would suggest some herbs to boost her immune system, offering those with high nutritional and therapeutic value will help give her that much needed boost. I would recommend offering her dried organic Nettle Leaf, Dandelion, Chickweed and Rosehip; you could also offer her the choice of either Barley or Wheat Grass powder. The powders both contain high levels of essential vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. In my experience horses will always prefer one to the other. More specifically you could offer your mare Yarrow either in the herb form or as an Essential Oil. Yarrow is effective as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic; it is wonderful for bruising and shock. Yarrow essential oil has been used for centuries for its ability to stem bleeding so this may be useful if your mare has sustained any minor internal wounds. If you are using the essential oil you will need to dilute it into a suitable carrier oil before allowing your mare to lick it from your hand. Essential oils must always be diluted as in their pure form they can irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose. As your mare has her young foal at foot, it will be even more vital for us to get the dosage just right to avoid putting the foal of her milk, please call me for more details. There are so many herbs and oils that could be of benefit to your mare at this time. Plants such as Marigold flower, Rose, Red Clover, Chamomile, and Bladderwrack may also be selected. The only way for me to be more specific would be to work with your mare in person or to test your mare's hair using Kinesiology hair testing. You can find more information regarding Kinesiology on my web site. Lastly, please offer these remedies one at a time on your hand; they must NOT to be added to the feed. The process of self-selection is very powerful, your mare, as with all animals, will intuitively know what she needs, how much she needs and how often she needs it, so please give her the opportunity to self-medicate you will be amazed at how clear she will be. If your foal shows an interest in any of the remedies that's great, I would encourage curiosity, remember your foal will be gaining the benefits of these therapeutic plants through mum's milk so may not be tempted to nibble at such a young age. Many congratulations on your new addition, |
